How to Humanize AI-Generated Content
AI writing tools are great for generating drafts, outlines, and raw material. But if you publish AI text without editing, readers will notice. The good news: with a few targeted edits, you can make AI-generated content sound genuinely human.
1. Break the "Perfect" Pattern
AI text is structurally too consistent. Every paragraph has a topic sentence. Every point is followed by an explanation. Human writing is messier. Fix this by:
- Starting sentences with "And," "But," or "Or" occasionally.
- Using sentence fragments for emphasis. "No. It does not work that way."
- Mixing very short sentences between longer ones to vary rhythm.
2. Add Personal Experience
AI cannot draw on real experience. Every example it generates is synthetic. Replace generic examples with real ones. If the AI wrote "Many businesses struggle with time management," change it to "Last year, I watched a startup burn six months building a feature nobody wanted." Specific, personal, real.
3. Remove Hedge Words
AI loves hedging: "it is important to note," "it could be argued that," "in many cases," "generally speaking." These phrases pad text without adding value. Delete most of them. If a sentence works without the hedge, cut the hedge.
4. Introduce Opinion
AI stays neutral. Humans take positions. If you are writing a blog post, include your actual opinion. "I think X is better than Y because..." "In my experience, the common advice about Z is wrong." Strong opinions make writing feel human.
5. Vary Sentence Openers
AI text has a tell: too many sentences start with the subject. "The research shows... The results indicate... The implications are..." Humans vary their openers — prepositional phrases, adverbs, questions, and conjunctions. Read through the AI text and rewrite the first 2-3 words of every third sentence.
6. Add Imperfections Deliberately
This sounds counterintuitive, but small imperfections make writing feel more human. A slightly informal word choice. A mild tangent. A rhetorical question. These are features of human writing, not bugs.
The Editing Workflow
Here is a practical workflow for humanizing AI content:
- Generate the draft with AI.
- Read it aloud — mark anything that sounds robotic.
- Add your personal examples and experiences (this is the most impactful edit).
- Delete hedge words and over-explanations.
- Vary sentence openers throughout.
- Add one or two opinions that only you would write.
- Run it through AIGC Check to see if it still reads as AI — if it does, repeat steps 2-6.
